Empowering and Protecting Audiovisual Performers Worldwide

GAVA is a unifying force among organizations managing audiovisual performers' rights in various countries around the globe. Founded with a shared vision of safeguarding the rights of audiovisual performers worldwide, GAVA represents a collaborative effort to address the challenges faced by actors in the rapidly evolving landscape of the audiovisual industry.

At GAVA, our mission is to champion the rights of audiovisual performers on an international scale. We are dedicated to ensuring that every performer, regardless of their background or location, is empowered, respected and fairly compensated for their creative contributions to the audiovisual arts. Through advocacy, education, and collaboration, we strive to create a world where the rights of audiovisual performers are universally recognized and upheld. By uniting organizations from around the globe, we work to advance the rights of audiovisual performers, fostering a vibrant and sustainable ecosystem for creativity and cultural expression.

We envision a world where every actor, dancer or voice performer is empowered, respected, and fairly compensated and rewarded for their creative contributions to the audiovisual industry.

Based on the priorities identified by the founding members in their answers to a comprehensive survey conducted for this purpose, the following list outlines the key areas of focus and strategic objectives for GAVA, reflecting the collective aspirations and goals of GAVA’s members.

Capacity Building

Prioritize initiatives aimed at enhancing the capacity and capabilities of member organizations to effectively manage audiovisual performers' rights.

Develop comprehensive training programs and workshops tailored to the specific needs of member organizations, focusing on areas such as governance, financial management, and operational efficiency.

Facilitate peer-to-peer learning and knowledge exchange among member organizations to leverage collective expertise and experience.

Promotion of Performers’ Rights

Promote the rights of audiovisual performers, particularly in the digital environment, video streaming services and user-generated content (UGC) platforms.

Advocate for fair compensation and effective management practices to ensure performers receive appropriate remuneration for the use or exploitation of their audiovisual performances.

Collaborate with WIPO and other relevant organizations in the preparation of studies or any other initiative on the remuneration of audiovisual authors and performers, by providing the WIPO and such other organizations with reliable data and information.

AI and Actors' Rights

Address the implications of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies on actors' rights, including issues related to data privacy, intellectual property, and fair remuneration.

Conduct research and analysis to understand the impact of AI technologies on actors' rights and the audiovisual industry as a whole, advocating for the development of ethical guidelines, standards, and regulations to protect actors' rights in the context of AI-driven content creation and distribution.

Ratification and Implementation of the BTAP

Advocate for the ratification and effective implementation of the Beijing Treaty on Audiovisual Performances (BTAP) at national and regional levels.

Support efforts to align domestic laws and regulations with the provisions of the BTAP to strengthen the international legal protection of audiovisual performers' rights.

Improvement of Cross-border Exchange of Information and Remuneration

Facilitate the exchange of information and remuneration between collective management organizations (CMOs) across borders.

Work towards establishing standardized procedures and mechanisms for transparent and efficient cross-border transactions between CMOs, with the ultimate goal of GAVA members being able to utilize SCAPR’s IPD and VRDB.

Sharing of Knowledge and Public Awareness

Promote knowledge sharing and raise public awareness on actors' rights and the importance of collective management.

Organize public awareness campaigns, workshops and events to raise awareness about the importance of protecting copyright and related rights, focusing on the audiovisual sector.

Publish a white paper on actors' rights providing insights, analysis and recommendations for policymakers, industry stakeholders and the general public.

Best Practices on Distribution Mechanisms and Data Collection

Develop and disseminate best practice guidelines and standards on distribution mechanisms and data collection for audiovisual performers' rights.

Provide technical assistance and support to member organizations in implementing these best practices and optimizing their distribution processes to ensure efficiency, accuracy and fairness.

Best Practices in Negotiation with Users and Users' Compliance

Develop negotiation toolkits and resources to empower member organizations in negotiating fair and equitable agreements with users of audiovisual content, including digital platforms and broadcasters.

Offer guidance and support in monitoring and enforcing compliance with legal and contractual obligations to ensure that audiovisual performers receive fair treatment and remuneration.

Enhancing International Cooperation for the protection and promotion of audiovisual performers’ rights

Protection and Promotion of Rights

Advocate for the creation of favorable legal frameworks, policies, and regulations at all levels to safeguard the moral and economic rights of audiovisual performers. Actively participate in legislative processes, provide support, and share knowledge to enhance legal protection and enforcement mechanisms for these rights.

Advocacy and Representation

Represent audiovisual performers and their organizations as a unified global voice in international forums, negotiations, and discussions. Collaborate with relevant stakeholders, such as international organizations and industry bodies, to effectively advocate for performers' concerns and perspectives.

Collaboration and Standardization

Promote and facilitate cooperation and knowledge-sharing among member organizations. Develop best practice principles, standards, and procedures related to the technical, legal, and administrative aspects of collective management activities for audiovisual performers.

Multi-territorial Exploitation

Support initiatives to enforce the economic rights of audiovisual performers in relation to the multi-territorial exploitation of their performances or works. Address issues related to the communication and distribution of audiovisual content across various platforms and technologies.

Research and Knowledge Sharing

Establish a platform for research, information exchange, and knowledge sharing on intellectual property rights, collective management practices, and developments in the audiovisual sector. Empower members to stay informed and make well-informed decisions to proactively manage and protect performers' rights.

Capacity Building and Assistance

Provide support and assistance to member organizations in implementing, developing, and strengthening their collective management systems. Share resources, offer training programs, and facilitate the development of policies on governance, transparency, and accountability within organizations.
